When i talk about running (post-race) / by Matthew Thompson

13.1miles in 01"35'57. Not too bad at all. And such a sound all those feet, bounding between the buildings of an emptied city, down the long, concrete tunnel that leads out to the bridge floating over Lake Washington. The tremendous crinkle of water cups being trampled underfoot and the man with a bullhorn, All runners to the right All runners to the right, overwhelmed by his own echo, into a whirring kind of buhhhrrr.

Of all there is to remember about a race, looking back at that ribbon of people winding up the street, feeling the rub of them shuffling beside you, smelling their sweat, it's the sounds I love the most. Thousands of feet running together, what a noise.
