As a child, to test perception, they would sit me in a chair. The doctor stood behind me and the room became dimmer. He draped his long hand along the base of my neck.  “Charles,” he’d say. “Charles, we are going to now play a game and I want you to face forward. I want to see how well those eyes of yours are working. Do you like colored pencils? There are five colored pencils here in my hand. In this game, I am going to take each colored pencil and move them slowly toward your eye. When you see the colored tip, lift up your hand. I want you to call out the color you see.”
